Three-toed Woodpecker: atypical adult male alpinus
This adult male alpinus, photographed in Slovakia (László Novák/Kármán Balázs) shows a very white, almost unbarred back patch. This is more typical of birds of the northern nominate race tridactylus. But note the very dark barring on the underparts which is typical of alpinus.
