The current standard book on world woodpeckers is WOODPECKERS: A guide to the Woodpeckers, Piculets and Wrynecks of the World by Hans Winkler, David A Christie and David Nurney. Published in 1995 by Pica Press, UK. Though numerous taxonomic and vernacular name changes have occurred since this volume was published, it remains the standard work. Anyone interested in picids should have this fine book.

Woodpeckers of Europe...
is dedicated to the 10 species of woodpecker (Picidae) that breed in Europe: 9 resident species and the migratory Wryneck. 8 of these 10 also occur outside Europe, with the distribution of Eurasian Three-toed, White-backed, Lesser Spotted, Great Spotted, Black & Grey-headed Woodpeckers stretching eastwards from the Western Palearctic into Asia, whilst Syrian is found in the Middle East & Asia Minor & Wryneck winters in Africa. The global ranges of Green & Middle Spotted Woodpeckers are confined to the Western Palearctic.

I enjoyed finding your blog as I search for an answer. I live in Munich and have been trying to track down what bird makes holes on the outside of buildings in higher elevations. The holes are all near the corners. I believe it must be some kind of woodpecker. I've observed a couple different kinds. Today I saw the bird go into the hole. I could swear it looked dark yellow or a lighter green. Could it be a green woodpecker? Do they build homes in building? Thank you and I hope to hear from you soon.
