I live in Munich and have been trying to track down what bird makes holes on the outside of buildings in higher elevations. The holes are all near the corners. I believe it must be some kind of woodpecker. I've observed a couple different kinds. Today I saw the bird go into the hole. I could swear it looked dark yellow or a lighter green.
