Grey-headed Woodpecker: distribution and range

The global range of Grey-headed Woodpecker stretches beyond Europe as far as Japan and down through Indo-China and the Malaysian archipelago to Sumatra. The nominate canus race occurs widely in Europe, but throughout its range occurs at low densities, being often rather localised. Essentially found in the temperate zone north of the Mediterranean and south of the boreal zone with populations also in the Fenno-Scandic taiga up to the Arctic Circle. It is absent from the British Isles, Iberia, most of Italy, southern Greece and the Mediterranean Islands. As well as having a fragmented, patchy distribution and using a diverse range of habitat types within Europe, Grey-headed also occurs at all altitudes from sea level up to 2000 m. .
